We recently removed mold/mildew from a home that was not being properly maintained.  The best way to remove it properly and efficiently, is to use a steamer.  The use of a steamer will allow for thorough cleaning, leaving you with beautiful windows.

There are many ways to prevent mold and mildew from growing in your home.  Here is a list of the top 4 ways to prevent mold/mildew growth.

  1. Turn on the exhaust fan while taking a shower. The use of an exhaust fan or vent fan for the washroom is extremely important in cutting down mildew and preventing growth on windows, walls, and ceilings. Make sure your fan works properly and is installed correctly for your washroom size.
    • Make sure the vent fan moves enough cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air for the size of your bathroom.
    • Exhaust the air from the vent fan to the outside of the house, not into the attic.
    • Use smooth ductwork and limit the length and bends as much as possible, following the instructions that came with the fan.
    • If your fan isn’t working, call a repairman as soon as you can.
  1. Limit your shower time. Not only is this good for the environment, but it is also a great way to prevent condensation and mildew growth.  The hotter the water, the more condensation.  Use cooler water, and that too, will make a difference in the spread of mildew.
  1. Use a dehumidifier to control excess humidity in your home. Some homes do not have enough air flow.  These homes will start to see a build-up around the windows quicker than homes with a better design for allowing air to flow.  If you notice mildew growth around your windows and sliding glass doors, then you may need a dehumidifier to prevent mold/mildew growth.
  1. Open your windows. Most newer homes have great windows and are fairly well sealed to prevent cold from coming in. As with most things, it has its disadvantages too.  You will need to make an effort to remember to air out your home by opening windows and allowing the air to flow to dry out those areas that maintain condensation.

Removing mold/mildew can take many hours and is not a pleasant job, but the results are well worth the time invested in removing it.  Not only, will your home look better, but it will be more welcoming and less of a hazard to those with mold and mildew allergies and/or sensitivities.
