CLV Award Night
Last week I had the honour of being invited to an award ceremony put on by Community Living Victoria. This non-profit organization provides support for children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities.
When I arrived at their head office, I was touched by the genuine smiles and the overall happiness that exuded from the helpers and the recipients. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect at the ceremony. I have been to many other ceremony events before, and from experience, sometimes they can be long and boring. However, the opposite was true. Not only, was it NOT long and NOT boring, it was enlightening and it helped me to have an entire new perspective on Community Living Victoria and those involved.
Once the award ceremony began, there was an heir of excitement in the room. Those that had a part in presenting the awards, were nervous and on the edge of their seats. I saw excitement and pride in their eyes. The energy in the room was contagious, and I too, was on the edge of my seat, hanging on every word that was spoken. There were many awards that night, but there are two that stood out.
The Teacher of the Year Award was presented by Cooper. I don’t remember the teacher’s name or what she looked like. I just remember a young boy speaking with tender love and admiration for his teacher. He spoke with such determination and warmth, that I too, would have voted her, Teacher of the Year. She had obviously touched Cooper’s heart. His wit and candor were so refreshing that he had the attention of everyone in the room. Cooper was articulate and had the crowd in stitches with his outspoken humour. He then revealed his heart and shared just how much his teacher has made an impact on him and his 6th grade life. His raw emotions brought tears to my eyes and those around me.
The Employer of the Year award was presented by Nathalie. You could see the excitement in her eyes as she prepared to read her presentation. She smiled at me and from across the room and then proceeded with her speech. Although I heard her words, I could only focus on the happiness and the sense of accomplishment that she carried with her. I humbly accepted the award, but after that night, I am convinced that the award should go to Nathalie and all those with disabilities that strive for more, and give 100% of their love and dedication to their work.
Thank you CLV staff and participants for granting me this wonderful opportunity and for voting me, Employer of the Year. It has been, and hopefully will continue to be, my privilege to work with you!
